~ Description from the official Contra: Operation Galuga website

Probotectors are autonomous humanoid robots appearing in Contra: Operation Galuga. Two units appear in the game, identified as M4D-0G (blue) and SC0RP1 (red).

They were voiced by Aaron Nurse.

Description[]

A Probotector is a training robot designed for combat and warfare, likely used for testing purposes such as external abilities or scouting missions. There are two separate units available: M4D-0G and SC0RP1. The former Probotector is blue with red highlights and minor cyan lining. The latter appears in a distinct red coloration with yellow highlights and pink lining, while also possessing a blue eye visor despite it always glowing orange in most images. These two Probotectors work under the Earth Marine Corps faction and appear with identical motions and voices with one another. The Probotectors come equipped with a built-in hover pack used for extensive horizontal movement. Within the same game, the hover-pack feature is also used by fellow squad mate Stanley Ironside of the GX Army. When idle for long enough, a Probotector will activate a scanner in its eye unit and "scan" the current area (this is merely a visual action and has no effect on gameplay). M4D-0G's assigned icon color is chrome, while SC0RP1's color is pink.

M4D-0G and SC0RP1 are both playable units and can be initially selected in the Contra: Operation Galuga demo. Each Probotector unit possesses a personal Perk that increases its own abilities. It is possible for a Probotector unit to utilize a personal perk from a different Probotector unit, allowing one unit to have to personal perks equipped (M4D-0G can use its own perk and SC0RP1's perk at the same time and vice versa). This technically makes the Probotector the only playable character to utilize a Perk from "another character" and the only character to utilize two personal perks simultaneously.

The two Probotectors appear scarcely within the game's story. Their role appears to be that of the chopper pilot for the commandos, as a robotic voice can be heard during the game's opening cutscene and comic book ending. Within the latter, model SC0RP1 is also seen piloting the chopper, but it is unknown if M4D-0G is also a pilot as it is never seen during any story mode cutscenes, meaning it is possible that only SC0RP1 was present during the entire story's events.

Notes[]

  • These Probotectors are directly based on their PAL exclusive variants with the same name from the Contra series. The Probotectors seen in Operation Galuga are the first variant of Probotector units to officially fight alongside their human counterparts, appearing within the "mainline canon" of the Contra series.
    • Although Contra 4 originally stated that Contra 4 is the first time Probotectors fought alongside their human counterparts, this is not entirely true. A Probotector cannot be paired up with a human character under any circumstance and a Probotector unit has no relation to the game's story. The claim made likely refers to a Probotector's first official appearance outside a European country.
  • Both M4D-0G and SC0RP1 resemble CX-1 and CX-2 respectively from Probotector (MD). M4D-0G also strongly resembles the blue Probotector from Contra 4 (another Contra game developed by WayForward).

Trivia[]

  • In Contra: Operation Galuga, the names of the two Probotector units M4D-0G and SC0RP1 are references to the characters Mad Dog and Scorpion. Their respective body/armor colors of blue and red are also a reference to the main colors of Bill and Lance, who once used the codenames of Mad Dog and Scorpion, respectively.
    • The way the former Probotector's name is spelled at the end may also reference the initials of Operation Galuga.
  • SC0RP1 makes a guest appearance as a playable character in the "Operation Guns" DLC of the roguelike shoot 'em up game, Vampire Survivors.
