Miyao Kappa (ミヤオカッパー Miyao Kappā?) is a miniboss in Contra: Hard Corps. It is a gigantic insectoid creature with a strong exoskeleton that shoots fast-traveling projectiles from its tube-like proboscis.

Description[]

A creature of unknown origins resembling a gigantic insect (probably being a failed experiment while using the alien cell). It resembles a purple skeletal alien with two big floating clawed hands. Its face has a pair of bug-like eyes, a tube-like snout and an exposed brain-like organ on the top of its head which acts as its weak spot.

It appears about one third through the Jungle stage, making a rather dramatic entrance as the Hard Corps are crossing a hanging bridge. The monster slowly emerges from a big waterfall in the background and takes hold of the bridge with its two enormous hands. It then proceeds to violently shake it up and down with the soldiers still on it in an attempt to disorient them. Afterward, its whole body will turn red and it will start shooting a volley of exploding projectiles from its snout at an absurd speed straight toward the player's last location. Once this attack finishes, it will once again take hold of the bridge and the whole pattern will start anew. The creature possess roughly 180 HP total.

Notes[]

  • It's possible to jump safely on top of either of its hands. The hands will shake violently in an attempt to throw the player off while they're firing at the head. If the player hits the roof while on a hand, they'll die (or take damage).

Trivia[]

  • A kappā (河童? lit. "river-child") is an amphibious yōkai demon or imp found in traditional Japanese folklore. They are typically depicted as green, human-like beings with webbed hands and feet, and a turtle-like carapace on their backs. A depression on its head, called its "dish" (sara), retains water, and if this is damaged or its liquid is lost (either through spilling or drying up), the kappā is severely weakened.
