The Human-faced Dog (人面犬 Jinmen Inu?, lit. "Human-face Dog"), also known as Man-Faced Mutt, is an enemy in the Contra series. It is a dog-like creature with a humanoid face that charges at the player as they pass by.

The Human-faced Dog is initially found in the background, digging its face in the rubble while presumably seeking for something to eat. While at first sight it appears to be a normal dog, if one waits long enough, it'll raise its head and stare at the foreground, revealing its gruesome nature. It initially remains passive, but when the hero goes past it, it'll suddenly leave its position and start rushing at full speed after them.

Its nature is undisclosed, whether it is an alien bearing these humanoid characteristics, or an earthly dog that was captured and mutated by the alien forces themselves.

  • On easier difficulty settings, these enemies will remain on the background and never chase the player.
  • These enemies do not appear in the Game Boy port, Contra: The Alien Wars.
  • In Contra 4, a Challenge Mode round titled "Mutt Hunt" involves shooting all Man-Faced Mutts within a stage before reaching its goal.

  • They appear to be tamable, as one appears in the ending of Contra III without attacking anyone. This particular mutt bears a lighter fur/skin tone and a slightly different face, appearing more "friendly".
  • In the City stage from Contra: Shattered Soldier, wolves are seen running in the beginning of the stage and then eventually attacking a Zako bot close by. It is unclear if these wolves are related to Man-faced Mutts or if the former's appearance is simply a reference to the latter's appearance within Contra III's city stage.
  • An enemy in the second stage of Contra ReBirth attacks in a similar style, although it is instead a mutant bird with a humanoid face.
  • This enemy may be a reference to the 1987 science-fiction horror film Invasion of the Body Snatchers, where in one scene, the protagonists are nearly caught by the alien "pod people" when one of them screams at the sight of a dog-man hybrid.
  • A purple Man-Faced Mutt appears in Challenge Mode of early Contra 4 prototypes, within the Jungle stage. Its color may be due to a palette glitch.[3]
