Take out the unmanned machines wreaking havoc on the city.
~ Instruction booklet description

City Battle is the first stage in Contra: Hard Corps.

Our security system has been breached by an unknown hacker. An unmanned robot is running rampant throughout the city! I want you to proceed to the area ASAP and restore order!
~ Commander Doyle at this stage's mission briefing

It is your usual city under siege by an immense evil threat. The Hard Corps are called into action. Our heroes start off their action-packed adventure by straight up ramming their vehicle into a massive payload of robots. It then soon crashes into a destroyed car blocking the road, but just because the vehicle stops doesn't mean the action does. Crashing through the windshield, our hero(es) continue the travel on foot while dealing with an infinite number of robots ready for the scrap pile. Beware the sniper robots on higher elevations. Lots of debris litter the floor. Time to get jumping! A large tanker truck also blocks the roadway. Just keep doing what you do best, blasting everything in sight! Buildings collapsing, need more jumping! That giant robot in the back blasting those buildings apart, guess who it's coming for next! Once the streets have been fully littered with robo-parts, only the leader robot remains, but it won't go down without a fight...

Once the city has been saved, choose wisely!

Regional differences[]

  • In Probotector (MD), there's no dialogue before Murasame's boss fight. Also, the dialogue after the fight has been altered.
    • In addition, "Go after Deadeye Joe" has been altered to "Go after Alien Commander".[1]

Theme of Hard Corps Boss 1 - A Spirit of Bushi.

  • This stage is listed as "Stage 01" under Stage Select.
  • This stage bears a few similarities from the city stage of Contra III: The Alien Wars. Both games also have a City stage as the first stage.
    • Near the beginning of the stage is a large high-rise of platforms with Zako Cannon bots. This area resembles a similar area in Contra III: The Alien Wars, both of which have a City stage as the first stage.
    • The beginning of the stage has Zako shooters high above the ground that when destroyed, takes a part of the building they are close to with it. This is similar to the one bunker building with a Ledder guarding it.
    • Closer toward the center of the stage lies a barricade with a Zako Cannon soldier on top of it. The barricade must be destroyed in order to proceed further into the stage, and red Zako units still infinitely spawn from the left side of the screen. This area may be a reference to the Fortress Wall areas from Contra III: The Alien Wars. The barricade being a motor vehicle could also somewhat be a reference to the destructible vehicle from Contra III.
