Appearances[]

Contra Force[]

When enough Weapon Power-ups are obtained by Burns, he can change his current weapon into Hand Grenades. Burns can fire two (or three with Turbo Power) Grenades in a high arc from his gun. While useful for taking out vertical positioned enemies, it leaves the player vulnerable to horizontal positioned enemies such as those in front of the player. In top-down stages, the weapon behaves similar, but it is generally more useful as the arc can clear over walls, striking enemies behind them.

Within the game's data exists unused sprites for Burns throwing the Hand Grenades in a similar fashion as the enemies. Only side-view sprites of this exist, there is no unused set of sprites for top-down stages.[1]

Hard Corps: Uprising[]

Leviathan is capable of throwing grenades and is the only playable character to use them. Pressing the Weapon Swap button makes Leviathan toss a grenade out in front of him, in a small horizontal arc. Leviathan also uses these grenades in an identical manner during his boss battle in Capital Tower.

Contra: Evolution[]

When Erica Ricci obtains the F power-up, her current weapon style is replaced with one that gives her the ability to fling infinite hand grenades. Erica will constantly toss grenades in an arc-like fashion in front of her, but only if she remains idle or is crouching. When moving, she is limited to firing only one pistol, using the same statistics as her default "Rifle-style" minus one pistol. Although tossed in an arc, hand grenades possess well accuracy, being flung directly at any enemy directly in front of her. Their high attack power and travelling speed is also worth noting. Some areas however do not allow her to toss grenades, mainly during the battles against Gromaides, Godomuga and Garmakilma. This is due to her always aiming upward automatically, forcing her to fire with only one pistol. The grenades will also not "home in" on anyone behind her or directly above her. In tunnel stages, the grenades can hit wall Sensors and enemies when they are tossed upward and not when they are landing.

Contra: Operation Galuga[]

When Ariana, Sheena, or Brad Fang acquire the Crush Gun power-up, the default Crush Gun changes to an arcing variant very similar to the Hand Grenades from Contra Force. This variant is known as Crush Grenades and uses the same model grenade as that of the Grenade Thrower and Acuba enemies, with an added red orange coloration.
