The Crab-Type[3] (inconsistently referred to as ??? in-game)[1] is an enemy Fiend in Contra: Rogue Corps.

Description[]

A crab-like cyborg sporting a singular central eye on its head and one eye on each of its mechanical claws. Each colored eye is a different color, and all three colors make up the non-Generic Affinity color line.

This enemy only appears in Exploration Missions under two separate conditions. For the first four Exploration Missions, the player(s) must reach the fourth section of the Mission and defeat all enemies, then this enemy may appear at random. It is currently unproven if this encounter is indeed purely random or there is a specific requirement(s) to achieve prior to its encounter. For the separate condition, this enemy will always appear as the final boss enemy for Chaos Finale. The heroes who defeat this mysterious threat are guaranteed to be awarded with Epic and Legendary loot drops.

Battle[]

Exploration Missions 1 through 4[]

When the Crab-Type appears, it shakes its claws high into the sky before starting its attacks. This small creature can launch one of its claws as a long-range straightforward fist-missile attack. After the detached claw breaks, it quickly grows it back. Whenever a character hugs close to the Crab, it performs a close-range spin with its right claw to repel them. It will never perform this attack twice in a row. When damaged enough, it will retreat into an eggshell. If this eggshell receives a massive amount of high damage, it cracks apart, defeating the Crab-Type as the shell drops small amounts of large sized Credits.

If the eggshell survives for long enough however, the Crab-Type re-emerges from it, having grown slightly larger. The creature now gains the ability to charge up energy from its fists and unleash a long energy wave slash straightforward. The creature will retreat into a larger egg when heavily damaged.

If the large egg is left alone for long, the creature emerges once again, even more slightly larger. It can now unleash bubbles from its body, which slowly travel all across the area for a limited time. It can attempt to enter another eggshell when heavily damaged.

If this giant egg lasts long enough, the creature emerges at a large size much larger than when it originally started out with. At full power, the creature the creature retains its attacks while having access to new ones. It can unleash a four-time rolling jumping slam. It can also perform a large slam at anyone close to its proximity. It also can charge energy and unleash it into multiple purple lightning bolt strikes from the sky. When at low Health, the Crab will charge up energy into itself, then soon unleashing into a massive dual-energy explosion surrounding itself. This explosion cannot reach too far distances. Its claw beam slash may sometimes be fired three times in a row (first with one claw, then its other claw, then charging both at once). The beam slash size is lengthened thanks to the creature's grown stature. The creature may sometimes burrow underground and reemerge back above ground, similar to a Big-Mouth Fiend. In co-op games, the Crab-Type will only be able to target one player at a time with its tunneling popup.

At largest form, this massive Crab takes a lot to drop but once enough damage is dealt, the beast falls to its back defeated and explodes. Defeating the largest form for the first time unlocks a Steam Achievement.

Exploration Mission 5: Chaos Finale[]

A large Crab-Type appears as the fourth and final boss enemy of Chaos Finale. Once the heroes reach the center of the shrine-like pyramid, the Crab smashes into the area ready for combat. This area is somewhat compact, leaving not much room to maneuver around in given the creature's great size. This boss enemy will constantly perform a single beam slash forward at times, a close-range ground pound to repel any close quarters heroics, a close-range spin swipe that propels the Crab forward a bit, and a series of four rolling jumps that each cause a consecutive slam whilst traveling. After losing 1/3 of its HP, several Gunman will enter the fray to provide support to the Crab. Turrets will also be summoned for additional enemy support. The Crab-Type will also perform its ground digging attack but will popup within a quick second of the danger circle appearing, making this attack much faster than with its other appearance. A well-timed dodge or invulnerability frames must be performed the moment the red danger circle appears (if targeted by the Fiend). When 2/3 HP is lost, four Damnation Pillars in the back will rise and release Laser fire on the arena. The Crab gains new attacks such as its triple-beam slash, a quick close-range slash when a hero is too close, and a large dual spread slash wave. Missiles also rain on the area. All these hazards may leave the screen feeling overwhelmed. Once the Crab is defeated, the attacks cease, and the Crab implodes into a black dimensional wormhole until permanently gone from existence. The heroes can then move onto the exit point.

Trivia[]

  • In one of the Medals descriptions, Crab-Type is spelled with a lowercase "t" in the word "Type" ("Crab-type"). Conversely, its name in one of the B.A.D descriptions uses a capital "T" instead.
  • When using the Bang Spike, impaled spikes tend to be lodged inside an invisible hitbox high above the Crab-Type itself.
  • The Crab-Type's one eyed stare and armored body gives its overall appearance a possible resemblance to Searle's Six-Men Feromados form. It is unknown if these two are related in any way (aside from being related to parallel Red Falcon factions).
