Napalm is a test menu in Contra 4.
Description[]
A test menu featuring the Jungle stage, with a decimal value on the top left to signal "intensity". There is no playability in this menu, instead the Control Pad scrolls left or right through the stage. Pressing the Y button raises the intensity of flames on the bottom of the screen as well as heat waves in the background, whereas pressing the B Button will lower this intensity. The intensity value has a minimum of 0.00 and a maximum intensity of 1.00.
Judging by this menu's name and features, this menu appears to be a flame test. Similar flames were utilized in Contra III: The Alien Wars. Given how the test uses the Jungle, as well as the stage housing burnt shrubbery, it is believed that at one point during development, the Jungle was planned to be on fire. It is unknown how this would have occurred however it may be related to two other scrapped elements:
- A flamethrower style soldier appears within certain test menus, such as the GYM. While it is unknown what this enemy's full role would have been, it may have been related to setting the Jungle on fire.
- An unused sound effect which hints at a bomber plane. This is similar to The Alien Wars.
Despite the fiery Jungle idea being scrapped, patches of burnt shrubbery remain in the final game, seen when walking up the large ramp to the mountain regions of the Jungle. Although the idea of a Jungle in flames was scrapped in Contra 4, it was later revisited and ultimately used in Contra: Operation Galuga, another Contra title developed by WayForward. A mention of the Jungle being incinerated was also used in Contra: The Board Game.
