The Chimera[1] is an enemy Fiend in Contra: Rogue Corps.

Description[]

A large tadpole-shaped alien-like Fiend possessing a human-like feminine face in its mouth and a pair of slim legs with holes at its tips. This body structure bears a strong resemblance to the Kimkoh species of Earth. It is possible this is an alternate variation of Kimkoh species from an Earth in which Red Falcon conquered the planet.

A Chimera will always enter the battlefield rising from underground, much like the mainline species. This creature is capable of firing multiple small energy blasts forward in a spread-like manner. It can also unleash a rain of explosive energy bullets arcing over its face-point position. The creature's weak point is its face.

There are several variants of this creature:

Standard[]

The Standard Chimera's[2] bullet spread will have an affinity matching the creature's own. When performing its explosive rain, the creature releases multiple purple blobs that rain besides it, inflicting minimal damage to its foes. After about half a minute upon its appearance, the creature's feminine face is retracted as the creature then stands tall, evolving its body into a towering grotesque worm-like creature with long tentacles. The feminine face is replaced by a monstrous one and its legs now act as arms. With powerful enough weaponry, it is possible to eliminate the creature before it mutates into its second form. The creature cannot be damaged during transformation.

In "battle mode",[3] the worm-like creature can swing its arms around it to repel close-range attackers. It constantly fires large destructible Devil Baby bombs. It can also spew a large liquid spray dead ahead, with the type of spray matching the beast's affinity. If the character is too far away, the mutated beast may perform a long horizontal charge. It the beast rams into a solid wall, it will be briefly stunned. Its weak point is the small monstrous mouth at the creature's base. This weak point is rather easy to target considering that the creature always chases forward after its prey. Some of this beast's attacks may cause the creature to release harmful purple blob projectiles.

The first of these Chimera appears in Mid-Tier Threat.

If a player loses a life and is downed, the creature in its second form may sometimes kneel down and stand horizontally idle in its pre-battle posture until the character respawns.

Armored[]

But there's still gotta be a weak point!

The Armored Chimera[4] is a slightly larger variant of the standard size Chimera. This larger variant hides its human-like feminine face and possesses more durable skin, able to block all incoming bullets from anywhere except its only weak point: the front of the face. Enough damage to this weak point will stun the creature for a limited time, revealing its face where it can be targeted to truly damage the creature.

The creature's attacks are more powerful than the smaller variant. Its spread shots will always possess generic affinity regardless of the creature's own affinity, but in-between shots will be twin-bullets of matching affinity shots mixed in from its leg tips. In addition to its arcing bombing, it can also unleash four electromagnetic roaming orbs to paralyze any attackers. The creature may also perform a rushing charge in front of its prey. During its attacks, the beast may charge up energy in its face. Once enough time has passed, the beast will unleash a large energy blast in a speedy counterclockwise circular sweep. This laser blast is highly similar to an attack used by the Kimkoh sub-species from Neo Contra. It is extremely difficult to dodge, requiring precise timing, although the beam cannot pass through solid walls.

Trivia[]

  • In the Rogue Corps official website, although its name is displayed on the side of its icon, highlighting its grayed-out icon to color will cause its name to vanish. This is odd as other Fiend icons on the website still keep their name on their respective icons when highlighted.
  • When a lesser Chimera evolves into its second form, its Victorian-era-like face retracts and transforms into a grotesque monstrous face. This is highly similar to how the Mother Alien from Contra: Hard Corps shifts its face. A lesser Chimera's battle mode also stands tall with long arms and fires living projectiles, much like the Mother Alien's battle strategy.
