A Bug[1] is a type of Fiend in Contra: Rogue Corps.
Description[]
A Bug is a type of creature with a humanoid closed-eyed face inside an insect-like body with long bent legs. The creature heavily resembles a Kimkoh species from previous Contra adventures, making it possible that Bugs could be related to the Chimera species of Fiend (aside from both simply being Fiends). Several Fiends also bear a distinct similar humanoid face as the Bugs, such as the Devil Baby and the MiniBug. It is possible that all four of these creatures are related in some type of evolutionary way. Given how the name "bug" is inside the name "MiniBug", this could signify that the MiniBug is an infant variant of bug Fiend.
Bugs are also used in several weapons accessible to the Rogue Corps, notably the Devil Baby and Acid Gun. In these weapons, Bugs are lit on fire as they roll or land toward enemy forces and expire after a set amount of time if they do not die via contact with a solid object. After the events of Rogue Corps, it is unclear what became of these creatures. More than likely, they eventually expired with the destruction of the Damned City.
Mission types[]
During various Missions (starting with Rogue Corps Stage 1-3), a massive sized Bug in circular form may appear at a certain area. Appearing rather suddenly by falling right out of the sky, they slam the area and start rolling directly forward in a designated pathway, behaving as a giant mutated boulder to instant crush any hero it hits. Dodging past them will not make the player immune to their instant death damage. Although normally these variants of Bug appear in giant sizes, in one rare instance they are roughly medium sized. These enemies cannot be harmed by weapons, as bullets will simply pass through their bodies. Once the boulder-shaped Bug reaches a certain point in its path, it will explode. Some areas however harbor infinite spawning points for these crushing Bugs.
The battle mode Chimera is able to fire explosive small-sized Bugs, much like in the style of player weapons harboring Bugs. These enemy variants however can be destroyed by character attacks or weapons before they have a chance to explode violently.
Carnage League[]
Bugs in uncurled form appear in the Carnage League. They are non-lethal and are merely used as "the ball" for Scoring in games. When a Bug appears, it simply wanders around slowly, giving off a distinct white glow to show their resilience to all forms of direct damage. Bugs are never seen without this glow, therefore making it unknown what their original coloration may be. When attacked by a player, a Bug will curl up into a ball and remain that way for the rest of its lifespan. Bugs will roll once attacked by weapons fire, with their distance depending on the firepower of the weapon used. If a Dodge attack is used on it, a Bug will be visually "lit" on fire and roll speedily in the general direction of where it was struck at with the Dodge attack. A rolling Bug will eventually lose momentum and cease rolling. Flippers may also propel the Bug elsewhere.
While indestructible to all attacks, they can only be killed by forcing them to roll into a Shredder, which is considered a team's goal during a Carnage League game. When a team member kills a Bug via an opponent's goal, the player receives points for their team. At this time, another Bug will appear on the battlefield. About halfway through a match, a gold-colored Bug labelled as a Gold Spirit Ball will drop down in the center of the arena. This golden bug, once it lands on the floor, will immediately curl into a ball and cannot be moved by attacks. However, if a character stands next to it and holds the Grab button, that character will be able to lift the bug up and carry it around like any other object or enemy. When tossed into a goal, the gold ball rakes in 10,000 points for a team, much more points than a standard bug. As a Carnage League game nears its end, more Bugs will be present on the arena.

Trivia[]
- Smaller variants of what could be Bugs also exist. These vicious round lumps behave like boulders and simply roll in a set direction or path. They possess no face and can be destroyed. It is unknown if these are possibly infant Bugs or MiniBugs.
