The Brontosaurus (unofficial name) is an environmental hazard featured in Contra: Hard Corps. It is a gigantic dinosaur that sneezes when struck on the head.

Description[]

A gigantic dinosaur whose body acts as part of the stage the player has to traverse after falling down the bridge in the Jungle stage. The player is initially withheld the knowledge of being walking on top of a dinosaur, but this is revealed as they finally reach its head. If the player strikes the head of the brontosaurus, it will sneeze a large volley of harmful balls that spread forward. During this section, the player is attacked by a group of Dumplings. If the player strikes the brontosaurus's head –either while trying to fend off the Dumplings or just out of curiosity– and they are in the way of the sneeze, this will harm them, which signifies an instant death (even in the Japanese version of the game, regardless of remaining HP); so, the player is advised to thread carefully while moving on top of the dinosaur's head and not to shoot wildly.

Trivia[]

  • Reportedly, the brontosaur has been the cause of many lives lost from newcomers to the game who have attempted to slide down the dinosaur's head, a move that both makes it to sneeze and at the same time puts the player in harms way.
  • The appearance and behavior of the brontosaurus in Contra: Hard Corps is likely inspired by a scene from the 1993 science fiction action film Jurassic Park, where the protagonists are awakened by the enormous head of a brachiosaurus feeding next to them after having slept on a treetop seeking refuge the night before. Lex, one of the group, tries to pet the animal, but much to her dismay this sneezes on her, covering her all in mucus.
