The Base Core is a recurring miniboss in the Contra series. It is a larger and more resilient form of the Nuclear Ball that guards the entrance to the room of the area boss in a pseudo 3D base stage.

Description[]

The Base Core is a defense system only found in pseudo 3D enemy base stages, and generally marks the last line of defense of the corridors section of these levels to prevent the heroes from breaching into the base's systems room. It basically is a miniboss version of the more common Nuclear Ball, being larger and more resilient. Only two Base Cores appear in the original Contra, one in each base.

In the original arcade version of Contra, two Gelguges appear at each side of both Base Cores, while in the NES port, an additional third one appears at the top of each core. Once these turrets have been taken care of, the Base Core can't do anything to defend itself other than relying on the remaining troops that still keep on fighting.

The MSX2 version of Contra features many more corridor levels than the original game, and thus, the player must face several more Base Cores, which get more defense features as the game progresses. Furthermore, in the more advanced extra levels not featured in other versions of the game, Base Cores even appear in the 2D platforming levels, acting as end area bosses and protected by many more defense mechanisms.

Contra 4 reimplemented the the pseudo 3D corridor stages from the original Contra, and not surprisingly, all enemies proper of these areas also reappeared in them, such as Nuclear Balls, Gelguges and Base Cores. However, in Stage 8, Alien Hive, Nuclear Balls and Base Cores take the appearance of grotesque alien eyes; although other than this aesthetic change, they behave identically to their classic counterparts.
