The Affinity system is a mechanic in Contra: Rogue Corps.
Description[]
An affinity is a type of alignment. Within Contra: Rogue Corps exists four different affinities, each representing an additional effect (or lack thereof). The Pause menu's Game Guide states that enemies with certain affinities possess weaknesses but fails to elaborate further. Therefore, it isn't clear if the Affinity system follows a "rock-paper-scissors" style of weaknesses for enemies (as is the case in numerous other games among various franchises).
Affinity types[]
Generic[]
Arguably the most common of the four types. Generic features no additional abilities whatsoever and is generally colored purple (primarily by enemy usage of the affinity). Considered "default" in most cases. In the case of the player's own weapons, any weapon without any of the following three affinity types is considered Generic affinity (unless otherwise specified). Generic affinity has no specific icon to represent itself.
Ohmeric (OHM)[]

A blue-colored affinity aligned with an electricity element. Ohmeric enemies are generally colored blue and possess the ability to paralyze foes for a brief time. Some enemies of other affinity types are capable of unleashing Ohmeric attacks (such as the Balloon-type and Greater Chimera).
Pyro (PYR)[]

A red/orange colored affinity that aligns itself with the power of fire. PYR grants the power to set foes on fire, which will cause them to lose a small portion of Health every few seconds until the status effect wears off. Many enemies are noted of this affinity by their red colored features, except for the Gunman and enemy Turrets.
Venom (VNM)[]

A green colored alignment with most enemies matching color. This affinity grants the ability to poison foes. Despite its name, the poison status effect causes a player to slow down significantly for a brief time. (this is likely to differentiate itself from the "Burn" status effect). Enemies inflicted with the Poison status effect will also have their speed halved for a brief time.

Trivia[]
- Hard Corps: Uprising featured a poison status effect that caused a player to lose Health every second they were poisoned until the status effect wore off. Players will not die from poison but will have their 1 HP down to one if low enough.
- In Rogue Corps, there exists usable Blade weapons resembling lightsabers from the Star Wars franchise. The lightsabers of red, green, and blue match with their Star Wars counterparts, however there is no "generic colored" lightsaber (purple), which is ironic as Star Wars has shown a purple lightsaber in the franchise.
- Of the many games to have a similar "element" of gameplay, the Affinity system bears a strong coincidental resemblance to the alignment system shown in the Nintendo Gamecube game Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem.[1] Both games feature horror-like elements and monsters and feature similarly looking red (and possibly blue) zombie-looking enemies.
